Treatment of pain is ideally focused on treating the source of the pain, not the symptom alone. Other than abdominal pain and headaches which we do not treat, the vast majority of pain is caused by muscles, joints or nerves. Orthopedic and neurologic pain can often be treated with injections. If those fail surgery is an option.
When all other modalities have failed and there are no more tests to get or treatments to try there are medications for the symptom of pain. Narcotics are the most effective and potent medications.
Because of the opioid crisis health care providers who prescribe narcotics for pain are required to provide care with a high level of compliance and there are state guidelines and laws that must be followed. Patients who receive prescriptions for narcotics have a signed contract, are subject to urine drug screens, have the state pharmacy database monitored, are monitored to prevent diversion, and must come to the office for a visit every four weeks to complete this compliance.
